Building an email funnel is easy. Building one that actually converts? Thatâs where most people fail. Here are the five most common mistakes we see â and how to fix them.
1. Sending Too Many Emails Too Fast
The biggest killer of email funnels is overwhelming new subscribers. Youâre excited, they signed up, and you want to tell them everything at once.
The fix: Space your emails out. A good onboarding sequence sends 5-7 emails over 14 days, not 7 emails in 3 days. Let each email breathe.
2. Generic, One-Size-Fits-All Content
If every subscriber gets the exact same emails regardless of what they signed up for or how theyâre engaging, youâre leaving money on the table.
The fix: Segment your audience. At minimum, segment by:
- How they found you (paid ad vs. organic vs. referral)
- What they signed up for (which lead magnet or landing page)
- How theyâre engaging (opening emails vs. ignoring them)
3. No Clear Call-to-Action
Every email in your funnel should have one clear thing you want the reader to do. Not three. Not five. One.
The fix: Before writing each email, answer: âWhat is the ONE action I want them to take?â Then build the entire email around that single action.
4. Ignoring Non-Openers
If someone doesnât open your email, most funnels just⌠move on to the next email. Thatâs a missed opportunity.
The fix: Add re-engagement logic. If email #2 isnât opened within 24 hours:
- Resend with a different subject line
- Adjust the timing of subsequent emails
- Move the subscriber into a lower-frequency re-engagement path
5. Never Testing or Optimizing
âSet it and forget itâ is terrible advice for email funnels. What worked last month might not work this month.
The fix: Continuously test:
- Subject lines (A/B test every email)
- Send times (morning vs. afternoon vs. evening)
- Email length (short and punchy vs. detailed and thorough)
- CTA placement and copy
